A Montepulciano from a local pair of friends known for their culinary and viticultural ties, this dry red is dark in color, yet medium-bodied. Fresh, with medium tannic structure, this comes from a vineyard planted in 1971, and sees fermentation and aging in cement. The winery takes its name from an important family from their area who was of Austrian heritage but whose family lived in Abruzzo for centuries. The last member of the family was Diego de Sterlich (1898-1976) who was a famous race car driver and co-founder of the Maserati brand in italy. He also dedicated himself to winemaking and helped preserve a focus on quality winemaking in italy.
Inky purple, staining the glass, the 2021 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is hard to ignore. It shows an intense dried cherry, cedar shaving and clove blend. This is a sweeping and dramatic wine. Vibrant acidity excites the vividly ripe red and blue fruits, and sweet spice saturates toward the close. For all of its power and depth, this cleans up beautifully, citrus-tinged and crunchy with dusty tannins that resonate. Well done.
