The Vieilles Vignes bottling of Viré-Clessé from Pascal Bonhomme is crafted from his oldest vines, which now range up to seventy-five years of age; twenty percent of the cuvée is raised in oak barrels, with the remainder in stainless steel. The 2021 Vieilles Vignes is outstanding, delivering a deep and complex bouquet of pear, apple, toasted almond, a beautiful base of chalky minerality, orange peel, gently musky floral tones and a deft touch of buttery oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and nicely ripe in profile, with superb depth of fruit, lovely soil undertow, bright acids and excellent focus and grip on the long, complex and impeccably balanced finish. This is lovely. 2023-2035.
Pascal Bonhomme runs this tiny, 2.5 hectare estate that’s located in the Viré-Clessé AOC, in the Mâconnais subregion in Burgundy. A throwback to classic and artisanal wine making, Pascal Bonhomme has some of the best situated sites in Vire-Clesse. Similar to vignerons in the Cot D’Or, Pascal harvest completely by hand and vinifies meticulously using pneumatic pressing. The estate is 2.5 hectares in size with most of its production being sold cellar door.
