Fruit is drawn predominantly from a 20-year-old parcel on the slopes of the great Cornas lieu dit, Les Chaillots, with the balance from old-vine parcels in La Sabarotte and La Côte. The vines have always been organically managed, and the owner/grower is a respected friend of the Graillots. Maxime Graillot's and Thomas Schmittel have the final say as to when the grapes are harvested and are able to send their own team in to do the picking.
The 2016 Cornas was bottled in December 2018 and will be released this month, after a year of bottle age. It shows the classic Equis signature of crushed stone and red fruit on the nose. Cranberries and red-skinned plums continue on the medium to full-bodied palate, which is framed by silky tannins that linger on the fine, lengthy finish. It should drink well for a decade, possibly longer. In this vintage, the assemblage is 50% les Côtes and 25% each Chaillot and Sabarotte, pretty typical for this cuvée.
